First Egg Bank has been introduced into EU Coding Platform launched by European Commission to help build the SEC (Single European Code) applied to human tissues and cells.
In February 2018 First Egg Bank has been introduced into EU Coding Platform launched by European Commission to help build the SEC (Single European Code) applied to human tissues and cells.
This web-based platform enlists two compendia:
- the EU Tissue Establishment Compendium, which includes information about all 2800 establishments that carry out permissible activities with tissues and cells and are authorized within the territory of European Union;
- the EU Tissue and Cell Product Compendium, which contains categories of tissue and cell product codes.
For this moment, additionally to the accompanying documentation on the donor, which is provided during each transportation, all the oocytes that are distributed by First Egg Bank to EU countries with the purpose of human application are labeled with the SEC according to the provisions of the Commission Directive 2015/565.
The definition and structure of Single European Code
SEC is a unique identifier, which ensures traceability of cells, that is tracking of the whole process of transferring cells from the donor to the recipient, and provides key data on the characteristics of egg cells. It allows the tissue establishment responsible for the procurement of tissues and cells to track them on their way to the recipient. It is possible by requesting the next operators in the chain to provide data concerning the use of the tissues and cells based on the donation identification elements of the Single European Code as contained in the accompanying documentation.
SEC comprises two main components each having certain codes and numbers as it is shown below:
- a Donation Identification Sequence:
- ISO Country Code,
- Tissue Establishment Number,
- Unique Donation Number.
- a Product Identification Sequence:
- Product Coding System Identifier,
- Product Number,
- Split Number,
- Expiry Date.
